Static vs dynamic QR codes
Both look the same on paper. The difference is whether a company's server sits between the scan and your page.
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| What is inside the pattern | Your destination itself | A short link on the provider's domain |
| Can it expire? | No | Yes, if the provider stops redirecting |
| Edit after printing | No | Yes |
| Scan counts | No | Usually |
| Typical cost | Free | Monthly or yearly plans, or $19 once here |
Choose static when
- The destination is permanent, like your homepage, a Wi-Fi network or a phone number.
- You do not need scan counts.
- You want zero dependence on any company, including us.
Choose dynamic when
- The destination will change, like a seasonal menu, an event page or a product manual.
- You print in volume and reprinting would be expensive.
- You want to know how many people scan it.
Before you print a dynamic code, check what happens if you stop paying. If the answer is "it stops working", you are renting it. Our editable codes are paid once and never renew.
A middle path
Point a static code at a page on your own website, then change that page instead of the code. This costs nothing and never expires, though you will not get scan counts.
